DT National Curriculum

'Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. High-quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation.’

How we teach Design and Technology

At Belton-Wroot Federation, Our Design Technology curriculum is designed to be accessible to all so that every child knows more, remembers more and understands more. We believe that all pupils can succeed in Design Technology. We do not put limits on what pupils can achieve and we do not hold pre-conceptions about any pupils’ ability to make progress. We believe through learning Design Technology, pupils will develop creatively and critically. In KS1 and KS2, we use Projects on a Page to help deliver our curriculum to ensure that progression across all year groups is visible.

Design Technology is taught in EYFS, KS1 and KS2. In EYFS, there is a continuous provision to support all needs and areas of Design Technology such as box modelling and the use of simple tools.  

In KS1, pupils will be taught mechanisms, textiles, food and structures.

In KS2, children are taught textiles, mechanisms, food, circuits and switches, structures, pneumatics, cams and pulleys and gears.
